De chegada à ilha, tratei de ir “trabalhar”. Decorar cada curva ao longo de 4,2 Km faz-nos lembrar do papel importante que têm os navegadores nos ralis. O percurso intercala alguns ganchos com zonas rápidas de cortar a respiração (do tipo “esquerda cega a fundo e acredita que é mesmo a fundo”). O piso, não sendo de pista, também não é mau. Chegada a hora das verificações, foi a altura para avaliar a concorrência. Ao nível de Clássicos os Madeirenses têm um “parque” de babar. Três Porsches 911 com ares de RSR, um Fiat 131 com ar de Abarth, um Toyota Corolla (Levin), um Talbot Lotus com ares de fábrica e Escort´s para todos os gostos. Do Continente tinham ido também o Escort RS 1600 (tipo WRC) de Ant. Estava já a olhar para as jantes do “meu” Yaris alugado, mas calçado com uns belos Michelin a “vê-las” já no Escort quando me informam que a rampa estava toda seca e apenas molhada nos últimos 50 m. Impossível. Só podiam estar a gozar comigo. Tinha chovido toda a noite a cântaros, a zona estava alagada do dilúvio e 100 m abaixo estava seco! Obviamente não acreditava, mas tal como S. Tomé fui ver. Montei-me no Yaris e desci a rampa. Incrível. Descobri o que é um micro-clima. Nogueira e os seus cerca de 700CV a cilindrarem a concorrência onde apenas o Escort do mesmo Nogueira (e as suas 12.500 RPM) ousou aproximar-se. Como a Madeira só tem um Campeonato de Ralis para Clássicos e VSH (viaturas sem homologação) os pilotos locais que disputam esse Campeonato teriam de levar o navegador ao lado, assumindo a prova o nome de “Rali Sprint” com um único troço feito por 2 vezes em treinos e 3 vezes em prova. No fundo, uma Rampa com navegador. Tentámos por 4 vezes e 4 vezes a cinta partiu, tal a forma como o chassi fazia vácuo na lama. O homem da máquina contratada pela organização para ajudar nos lamaçais, passou-se e foi embora. Ainda tentámos com outros jipes de outros concorrentes, mas ficaram lá também. Já estava noite escura e tivemos de abandonar ali o carro. Ficaram lá 17 carros. Afim de garantir o campeonato, aluguei este Ford Escort RS 1600 BDA (motor de 16v com cerca de 270 cv) para fazer as duas ultimas provas. Os outros candidatos ao titulo também se sobre-equiparam para a ultima corrida, mas felizmente consegui assegurar a vitória no Grupo 5, também nestas 2 provas. Nesta ultima, a vitória foi discutida até ao fim com o Ferrari Daytona de Miguel Pais do Amaral (o ex-boss da TVI). Como não era piloto oficial da marca, deixaram-me o carro pronto para o experimentar em terra pela primeira vez... na linha de partida desta primeira prova. Logo no prólogo que se realizou em Espanha (zona de Ayamonte e Huelva) fiquei em 7º lugar do Troféu Terrano II (35 concorrentes ao troféu) à frente de dois irmãos, hoje muito conhecidos pelas participações no Dakar, os Inocêncios. O segundo era um compacto dos míticos troços da Serra, num total de 17 Kms. Como situação de recurso, o meu amigo Nuno Rodrigues da Silva (que viria a ser Campeão do Mundo de Navegadores – Gr. N ao lado do Rui Madeira) deu um curso intensivo (serra acima, serra abaixo) de navegação à então minha namorada (hoje, minha mulher) Fátima Leão, e confesso que foi a minha melhor navegadora até hoje! Em 1993 incluiu também uma rampa – a da Pena.&lt;br /&gt;Nesta primeira prova o meu navegador era o meu amigo Paulo de Carvalho.&lt;br /&gt;No primeiro troço (a antiga Rampa de Porto de Mós) eu estava tão nervoso que ainda hoje tenho a sensação que fiz a primeira curva para a esquerda, na faixa da direita!&lt;br /&gt;O rali estendia-se noite dentro com provas de regularidade no Pinhal de Leiria. O Paulo enjoou e além de termos de parar para ele “gregoriar”, perdeu-se no road-book e como à noite todos os gatos são pardos, e as árvores ainda são mais iguais, “só” perdemos meia-hora. A partir daí acabou a regularidade e foi sempre a fundo até ao fim. Quando recebemos o quadro de penalizações, verificámos que nos primeiros pontos tínhamos penalizações por atraso que foram diminuindo, até que a partir de certa altura já estávamos a penalizar por avanço, tal o ritmo louco que imprimimos até ao fim!
